Electroencephalography (EEG) β€” Brain Wave Recording

What is an EEG Test?

An EEG (Electroencephalogram) is a non-invasive test that records the electrical activity of the brain using small electrodes (sensors) placed on the scalp. Brain cells (neurons) communicate through electrical impulses, and an EEG detects these signals and displays them as wave patterns. Different brain conditions produce characteristic EEG wave abnormalities that help doctors diagnose and manage neurological disorders.

EEG is painless, safe and involves no needles, injections or radiation of any kind. The electrodes only record electrical activity β€” they do not pass any current into your brain.

Preparation tip: Wash hair thoroughly the night before β€” do NOT apply oil, gel or conditioner. Eat a light meal before the test (do not come fasting unless instructed). Bring all previous reports and your neurologist's prescription.

Types of EEG Available

Routine EEG (Awake)

Standard 20–30 minute brain wave recording. Used for seizure disorders, epilepsy screening, and general brain function assessment.

From β‚Ή800

Sleep EEG / Sleep Deprived EEG

Recorded when the patient is drowsy or asleep. Seizure activity is more likely to emerge during sleep. Requires staying awake the night before.

From β‚Ή1,200

Video EEG (VEE-EEG)

Simultaneous video recording with EEG to correlate clinical behaviour with brain activity. Essential for differentiating epileptic from non-epileptic events.

From β‚Ή1,500

Paediatric EEG (Children)

Specifically for children with seizures, developmental delays, autism spectrum, or ADHD assessment. Our technician is experienced with paediatric patients.

From β‚Ή800

When is EEG Test Recommended?

  • Epilepsy and seizure disorders β€” diagnosing seizure type, monitoring treatment response
  • First seizure evaluation β€” after a first-ever seizure episode to assess risk of recurrence
  • Fainting spells / blackouts β€” to determine if episodes are seizure-related or non-epileptic
  • Sleep disorders β€” sleep apnea evaluation, parasomnias, REM sleep behaviour disorder
  • Encephalopathy β€” confusion, altered consciousness, metabolic brain disorders
  • Headaches and migraines β€” to rule out seizure-related migraine aura
  • Brain death assessment β€” confirmatory test in certain clinical scenarios
  • Autism and ADHD β€” neurological baseline assessment in developmental disorders
  • Post-brain injury β€” monitoring brain function after head trauma or stroke

How to Prepare for EEG

  • Hair: Wash your hair the evening before. Do NOT use oil, gel, spray or conditioner. Clean, dry hair is essential for good electrode contact
  • Eating: Eat a light meal 2–3 hours before. Do NOT come hungry β€” low blood sugar can affect results
  • Sleep deprivation EEG: Stay awake the entire night before. Avoid caffeine
  • Medications: Continue all regular medications unless specifically told otherwise by your neurologist. Do NOT stop anti-epileptic drugs without doctor's instructions
  • Relax: Stress or anxiety can affect brain wave patterns. Come relaxed and rest well before the test
  • Children: Bring a favourite toy or snack to keep the child calm during the test

EEG Test Procedure β€” Step by Step

1

Registration & Consultation

Show your doctor's prescription at reception. Our technician will explain the procedure, answer your questions, and fill out a brief clinical history form.

2

Electrode Placement (10 min)

You sit comfortably in a reclining chair. The technician measures your head and marks the scalp positions. Small electrodes are applied using a water-based conductive gel β€” no needles, no pain.

3

Recording (20–40 min)

You relax with eyes closed. During the recording, the technician may ask you to: breathe deeply for 3 minutes (hyperventilation), look at a flashing light (photic stimulation), and open/close your eyes. These are standard activation procedures.

4

Sleep Phase (if required)

For sleep EEG, you will be allowed to fall asleep naturally in a comfortable position. The recording continues during light sleep.

5

Electrode Removal

Electrodes are removed easily. The gel is wiped off. You may wash your hair immediately after. No restrictions on activity.

6

Report Preparation

The EEG recording is reviewed and interpreted by our neurologist/EEG specialist. Report ready within 2–4 hours. Sent via WhatsApp and email.
